What this guide is
The Claude Certified Associate - Foundations exam (CCAO-F) is written against the 30 objectives in the official exam guide, grouped into seven domains. This study guide has one lesson for each objective, in the same order, so you can read it front to back or jump to the domain your score report says is weak.
Every lesson is built the same way. It starts with a workplace situation, before any jargon. It then teaches the idea one step at a time, following a single realistic example all the way through: an operations manager, an analyst, a marketer or a teacher doing one real piece of work with Claude. Diagrams and tables carry the parts that are easier to see than to read. Each lesson names the traps the exam sets around its objective, because most CCAO-F questions are not "what is X" but "what is the most appropriate thing to do here". It ends with a short exercise you can do in the Claude app, which spoils one ingredient on purpose so you see why it matters, a list of takeaways, and five practice questions with every answer option explained: four written for the lesson and one from the same bank that powers the timed simulators.
You do not need a technical background. The exam is written for people who use Claude as a productivity tool in operations, marketing, project management, education and communications, and every term is explained the first time it appears. Plan on 10 to 15 minutes per lesson.
How to use it
- Read the CCAO-F exam guide page once. It has the facts (60 questions, 120 minutes, pass at 720 on a 100 to 1,000 scale) and the registration rules.
- Work through the domains in order. Domain 1 teaches the prompting habits every later domain assumes, and Domain 2 is the heaviest on the exam at 21%.
- After each domain, take the domain quiz in the question bank. It draws 10 random questions from that domain and shows which objectives you keep missing.
- When every domain quiz is comfortably above 80%, sit the 60-question timed simulator. Treat a simulator score under 75% as "not yet", whatever the real pass mark is.

Domain 1: Prompting and Task Execution
How to brief Claude so the first answer is close to right: a good prompt, splitting big requests, iterating, and prompting by task type. 14% of CCAO-F.
Domain 2: Output Evaluation and Validation
Judging Claude's output before anyone sees it: accuracy, hallucinations and bias, fact-checking, when a human must review, audience and format. 21% of CCAO-F.

Claude beyond single prompts: requirements, research and planning, solution design, fitting it into workflows, and explaining it to stakeholders. 16% of CCAO-F.
Domain 5: Configuration and Knowledge Management
Setting Claude up for repeated work: Project instructions and knowledge, uploads versus connectors, system-level instructions, and upkeep. 12% of CCAO-F.
Domain 6: Governance, Risk, and Responsible Use
Using Claude safely at work: appropriate uses, sensitive and regulated data, your organisation's AI policies, and the ethics of AI use. 15% of CCAO-F.
Domain 7: Troubleshooting and Optimization
When Claude underperforms: diagnosing weak prompts and poor outputs, adjusting from feedback and results, and making workflows faster. 10% of CCAO-F.
Three things that surprise people
The exam is about judgment, not features. Most questions describe a work situation and ask for the most appropriate action. Knowing that Projects or research mode exist is rarely enough. You have to know when each is the right choice, and what to check before the output leaves your hands.
The right answer is usually the proportionate one. In the official sample questions, the wrong options either trust the output as it is, overreact by dropping the task, or fix something beside the point, such as rewording a summary or switching platform. The right option deals with the actual risk and lets the work go ahead safely. Every lesson names the distractors for its objective.
Checking the output is the biggest domain. Output Evaluation and Validation is 21% of the exam, more than prompting at 14%. The exam cares as much about what you do after Claude answers as about what you type before it.
Frequently asked questions
Is this study guide really free?
Yes. Every lesson, every practice question on these pages, and the full question bank are free. The bank asks for an account only because the quiz engine has to store your answers to score them and show which domain is weak. Nothing here is behind a paywall.
Do I need a technical background?
No. The official guide says no software-development or API experience is needed, and these lessons assume none. What helps most is regular hands-on use of Claude at work, so try each lesson's exercise as you go.
Do I need a paid Claude plan for the exercises?
Most exercises work in any Claude account. Where a step needs a paid plan, the lesson says so.
Is it enough on its own to pass CCAO-F?
It covers every objective in the official guide, which is what the questions are written against. It cannot replace practice. The exam rewards judgment you build by using Claude on real work: writing briefs, checking outputs, setting up a Project, deciding what not to upload.
Is this affiliated with Anthropic?
