Community Roundup - What Candidates Learned After an Unsuccessful CCAR-F Attempt
Not passing CCAR-F on the first attempt does not necessarily mean you need to start your preparation from zero.
We reviewed several public candidate experiences to see what went wrong, how close people were to passing, and what they planned to change before their next attempt.
696 on the first attempt, 809 on the second
One candidate shared a particularly useful progression:
- 567/1000 on an early practice test
- 696 on the first real CCAR-F attempt - only 24 points below the passing score
- 818/1000 on a later practice test
- 809 on the second real attempt - passed
The candidate said the biggest problem was not a lack of study material. There was actually too much material.
They used official resources, guides, PDFs, videos, and community discussions, but different sources sometimes gave conflicting explanations. Some also went much deeper than what appeared to be necessary for the exam.
Interesting takeaway: adding more study resources is not always the solution. A more focused preparation strategy can be more effective than trying to learn everything you can find.

708 - only 12 points short
Another candidate reported scoring 708/1000, just below the 720 passing score.
What made the result surprising was that they had been very confident before the exam. Their mock-test performance had made them expect a score somewhere in the 900s.
After the real exam, they identified one major weakness: they did not yet have much practical experience using Claude and working with the concepts covered by the certification.
Interesting takeaway: excellent mock scores can hide a gap between recognizing the correct answer in practice and making architecture decisions without much real-world experience.

662 after repeatedly scoring in the 900s on mocks
Another candidate reported a score of 662/1000 after taking seven or eight mock exams and scoring in the upper 900s on all of them.
That difference between practice performance and the real result was significant.
The candidate said they only realized shortly before the real exam that at least one more challenging practice source was very different from the mocks they had been using.
Interesting takeaway: consistency across easy mock exams can create false confidence if those mocks are not representative of the reasoning difficulty of the real certification.

A candidate reported 598 despite feeling confident about much of the exam
One candidate reported receiving 598/1000 and said the result was much lower than expected based on how they felt during the exam.
They also questioned parts of their score breakdown and contacted Pearson to ask whether there had been a scoring problem. According to the candidate, Pearson reviewed the concern and did not identify an issue.
This is useful because perceived performance during an exam can be very different from the final score, especially when several answer choices seem defensible.
Interesting takeaway: feeling confident about an answer is not always a good signal in scenario-based architecture questions. The difference may be between a technically valid solution and the solution that best satisfies the scenario's constraints.

A recurring pattern: mock scores did not predict the real result very well
The most interesting pattern across these reports is the gap between practice confidence and real exam performance.
Some candidates were scoring very highly on mock exams and still finished below 720 on the real exam.
This suggests that readiness should probably not be measured only by percentage correct. It is also worth asking:
- Can I explain why every other option is weaker?
- Can I identify the main constraint in a long scenario?
- Can I make the same decision without recognizing a familiar practice-question pattern?
- Do I understand the architecture trade-off, or have I memorized the expected answer?
- Have I actually built or debugged systems involving these concepts?
What seems to help before a retake
Based on these candidate experiences, a retake plan may benefit from focusing less on simply completing more mocks and more on understanding why mistakes happen.
- Review the weakest areas from your score report.
- Return to the official exam objectives before adding more third-party material.
- Practice difficult scenario questions with realistic distractors.
- For every mistake, explain why the other options do not fit the scenario.
- Add hands-on practice if your first preparation was mostly theoretical.
- Do not treat a very high mock score as proof that you are ready.
